Township receives portrait of police dog
Pictured are West Brandywine Township Police Officer Gary William and Ralph Ippoliti with the oil portrait Ippoliti recently presented of William’s dog, Rudy, to the township.
The West Brandywine Township Board of Supervisors recently accepted a gift of a white wooden-framed oil portrait of the township's police dog, Rudy from resident Ralph Ippoliti.
Ippoliti recently opened Studio Creations, an art education studio on Manor Road located within the township to teach art to local resi-dents. The oil portrait features the dog's head in a three-quarter pro-file with a blue and white back-ground.
Police Officer Gary Williams who works with and trains Rudy said the portrait process was not difficult for the dog. Williams said, "Several photos of the dog were taken and Mr. Ippoliti selected one." Ippoliti made the oil portrait from that one picture. Williams commented how quickly the entire process came together.
Ippoliti estimated the oil portrait took approximately 30 hours to complete. He said he used tradi-tional oil methods to paint Rudy's portrait, but Ippoliti specializes in the Bob Ross landscape and floral oil painting technique. Ross's technique is fast and allows an artist to complete the work in one sitting.
Ippoliti has been involved in art in different forms for most of his adult life. At one point he had formed a product development company combining the works of artists, designers, model makers, and casting technicians.
After his retirement. he became interested in teaching art to both children and adults including classes for those with special needs. Ippoliti. himself. specializes in painting oil portraits of both people and their pets. Ippoliti said, "Each medium has its advantages. Oil painting is more forgiving."
The board of supervisors accepted the oil portrait and thanked Ippoliti for his efforts. Supervisor Joe Obernier said, "The portrait of Rudy will be displayed in the new township municipal office building once it is completed."
According to Police Chief Walt Werner, Rudy is a certified working police dog and has received a recent award for his tracking of individuals outside the township. The dog and his handler, Williams, will soon receive additional training in January. In addition to the current tracking certification, Rudy will undergo drug-searching training. Werner said, "Training is ongoing."

Werner said Williams and Rudy receive six hours of training a month to keep their certification current and praised the dog's and Wil1iam's work so far. He called the new attempt at the drug certification another step to increase his usefulness to the township. Werner added, "It's a big step."
